Spring’s last ‘Songbag’ concert

May 28, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$5

The final “Songbag” concert of the spring features singer/songwriter John Heasly on May 28 at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site.

Heasly plays guitar and brings a wide variety of musical influences to his performances, from the Eagles to Mississippi John Hurt to Doc Watson. He’ll be joined by Jerry Schroeder.  Schroeder plays guitar, ukulele and sings.

In addition to performing, Heasly has organized the Songbag concerts for years, bringing amazing talents and a huge variety of styles to Galesburg.

The concert takes place in the Sandburg site’s barn at 313 E. Third Street, Galesburg. The show starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 with a break for refreshments around 8. A donation of $5 per person is suggested. The concert is sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association. Carl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America’s folk songs. The series is named in honor of Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag,” published in 1927.

The fall Songbag series begins Aug. 27.

The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site includes the home where the famed poet and biographer was born. For more information, visit www.sandburg.org.

The site is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. IHPA protects the state’s historic resources, which contribute to education, culture and the economy. IHPA sites include ancient burial mounds, forts and buildings erected by settlers, and homes connected to famous Illinoisans.
