“It’s Only A Play”-A Comedy presented by Sugar High Theatricals

Sugar High Theatricals, in association with the Kensington, takes audiences behind the curtain in “It’s Only a Play” by Terrence McNally. For three performances only, this wickedly funny romp will be performed in the Kensington Ballroom, 311 E. Simmons St., at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.

Directed by local theater veteran Gary Mustain, “It’s Only a Play” takes audiences to the 1992 opening night of “The Golden Egg” on Broadway, where wealthy but ditzy producer Julia Budder (played by Rowan Williamson) is throwing a party at her Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but upstairs a crazy cast of characters await the all-important opening night reviews.

Peter, the rising star playwright (played by Matt Newman), is nervously awaiting the reviews for his Broadway debut while Peter’s best friend, James, now a Hollywood actor, is waiting on the reviews for his own reasons, having turned down the play to do a TV series. Joining them are aging leading lady Virginia, who has had a little too much booze and anything else she can get her hands on, and eccentric director Franny Finger. Add to this a vicious drama critic and a new-in-town aspiring singer, and you have a prime recipe for comedy. Tickets are available with a reservation or at the door; the price is $15 per person or $5 for students. Reservations are recommended, as seating is limited and will be arranged in order of time of reservation. Alcoholic beverages and concessions will be available for an additional charge.
