Gustavo Cortiñas Desafío Candente
Winter Jazz Series will present Gustavo Cortiñas’ Desafío Candente, a multimedia project inspired by Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano’s book “The Open Veins of Latin America”. The full length LP features collaborations of 21 musicians and 13 guest speakers, from 11 different countries, in a collection of 14 tracks, Desafío Candente takes you on a journey through Latin America and its history of colonialism, imperialism, and neoliberalism. Desafío Candente denounces the power structures that run Latin American and prey on its people to this day, while it also celebrates the resilience, spirit and creativity of its very diverse communities.
Recently receiving a 4 star review in Downbeat magazine, “The author’s critique of slavery, colonialism, capitalism and imperialism has its equivalency in Cortinas’s melodies. On “Pachacuti,” the tantalizing interplay between trombonist Euan Edmonds and trumpeter Drew Hansen evokes the struggle and resistance that was such a part of the fight for liberation. A similar fury resounds on “La Fiebre del Oro” when saxophonist Artie Black presents his musical credentials with a tinge of Latin verve. The revolt against oppression reaches a climax that is better understood with Galeano’s book in your hand and Cortinas music in your ears.”
Sponsored by The Knox Jazz Year, The Galesburg Community Foundation, The Knox College Cultural Events Committee, Greig-Post Adventure in Arts Fund, Knox College Music, Modern Languages, and English Departments.
