Public meeting regarding rehabilitation grant for homeowners

An informational public meeting is being held in two weeks to provide information and discussion on a Single Family Owner Occupied Rehabilitation grant the city of Galesburg received from the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

The program is designed to help low-to-moderate income homeowners repair and rehabilitate their houses to correct code violations, or address health and safety issues, and lower energy consumption.

Funds are provided in the form of individual grants to homeowners as a forgivable loan, which is repaid by living in the house for five years after the construction work has been completed.

The rehab program has specific rules as to what work can and cannot be done. Participants will have to be aware and agree to the limitations of the program.

Jeff Cozadd with the Western Illinois Regional Council will be in attendance where he will answer questions from the public ad discuss the application process. Homeowners may schedule an appointment to complete an application at the conclusion of the meeting.

To qualify, households must be at or below a threshold of 80% of area median income. For household of four the maximum eligible income is $48,300.

There is a variety of criteria that will prioritize eligible applicants such as elderly or disabled members, or very low income households below a threshold of 50% of average median income for Knox County.

Cozadd says that local contractors who are interested in bidding on the program are encouraged to attend as they’ll explain the bidding process, insurance and other procedures.

The meeting will be held on July 18th at Council Chambers at City Hall.

If you’re unable to attend the meeting and would like to schedule an appointment to be considered for the program, you may contact the Western Illinois Regional Council at (309) 837-2997. Phone calls will be accepted beginning July 19th. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
