Meet October’s KFM Teacher of the Month

Congratulations to October’s KFM Teacher of the Month – Deb Melton – a Homeroom/Advocacy teacher at Galesburg High School. Here’s a little bit about Deb:

How many years teaching? 34 years – I will retire at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.
Favorite subject growing up? I enjoyed English class.
Favorite subject to teach? I enjoy teaching English, Reading and Writing.
Favorite food? I enjoy many foods but tacos, pizza, and lasagna are some of my favorites. Also anything chocolate makes me one happy lady.
Least favorite food? I don’t enjoy any food that is green.
Favorite movie?  My favorite movies are The Sound of Music and White Christmas.
Favorite TV show?  I love watching game shows on tv.
Favorite sports team?  I don’t have a favorite sports team but enjoy watching football and baseball no matter who is playing.
What do you like to do in your spare time? During my spare time, I like to make crafts, travel, and spend time with family and friends.
Something about you that people may not know:  I have taught in juvenile and adult correctional facilities.

Deb was nominated by former student Kyle Atwater and this is what he had to say about Deb:

What sets this teacher apart from others?
Mrs. Melton has a food day to celebrate the seniors’ last day. For example, Mrs. Melton had made chicken buffalo dip and brought it to my house since COVID had it and we couldn’t be in school as a class. Mrs. Melton likes to celebrate the little things, because those little things matter. Her students have been her first priority. There should be more teachers like Mrs. Melton, that celebrate the little things. The little things lead up to big accomplishments.

What is one thing this teacher does that is not in their job description but they do it anyway to help you or your child?
Mrs. Melton takes time out of her day to look at each student’s grades to make sure they are doing well in their classes. She encourages students to ask for help, if they are struggling. She makes school fun, she greets you before you walk into her classroom. Mrs. Melton is a teacher who guides her students to success.

Give an example of a way this teacher has helped or impacted you or your child.
Mrs. Melton checked on me when I moved away from college because she knew it was a struggle for my family. She has encouraged me to do what is best for myself. Also, she told me not to give up on my dreams. Mrs. Melton helped me as freshman in high school, to not be afraid to ask for help.

As as Teacher of the Month, Deb receives the Big Red Apple Award with her name engraved on it courtesy of Lacky Monuments, a $100 gift card from Tompkins State Bank, and a balloons and a gift card from Casey’s Party Creations.  Congratulations Deb!
