Knox County unemployment rate doubled in last year

The unemployment rate in Knox County has doubled in the last year, no doubt a reaction to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the unemployment rate for the county was 9.6 percent for the month of July. This marks a 4.8 percent increase from the same month a year ago.

During that time, the labor force shrunk from 22,155 individuals to 21,095. The number of people unemployed increased from 1,073 to 2,033.

Looking at the City of Galesburg, the unemployment rate for July of 2019 was 5.2 percent and increased to 10.7 percent. During that time, the number of unemployed doubled from 637 to 1,276.

This change wasn’t unique to the County of Knox or the City of Galesburg. Warren County also saw an increase in the unemployment rate from 4.4 percent to 7.1 percent in the last year.

Peoria County saw the most drastic change in its unemployment rate, going from 5.1 percent to 12.3 percent.

McDonough County had the lowest change, from 7.7 percent to 9.4 percent in the last year.
