Meth, firearm, and ammunition discovered after Crimestoppers tip

An alleged altered firearm and “thousands of assorted rounds” were discovered after a Crimestoppers tip led to the arrest of a wanted Galesburg man.

Galesburg Police responded to the 1,000-block of East North Street at around 10:30 Sunday morning after receiving a tip that 44-year-old Edward W. Fox Sr. was hiding out in a house in the area. Fox had outstanding Knox County warrants as well as an Illinois Department of Corrections parole warrant.

Reports say that officers made contact with the owner of the property that Fox was allegedly hiding out at, 45-year-old Brennan L. Taylor, who advised police that Fox was at the residence and he would retrieve him for them.

Officers at the rear of the residence reported that Fox was attempting to flee by exiting from the back door. He was arrested without incident.

A red flashlight was discovered to allegedly be in his possession as he was leaving. It didn’t work and when officers opened it up, they allegedly found a glass vial containing a shard of what resembled crystal ice methamphetamine. It would later field-test positive as meth.

Fox was escorted to a patrol vehicle where he shared with police that Taylor had a silver firearm and lots of ammunition inside the residence. He said to police that the gun had been stolen from a storage locker. He also denied ownership of the discovered meth and flashlight, saying that Taylor told him to take it when he was leaving.

Taylor was questioned about the gun, to which he allowed police into the residence and showed them where the gun and ammunition were stored, in a hidden crawl space in the basement.

Police reports list that two toolboxes and a cloth sack were found containing the gun, several magazines, and ammunition. Due to Taylor being a felon, he was arrested.

Taylor would tell police that he did not know where the firearm came from but that he was given it to clean. It was identified as an Eastern Arms 4-10 Shotgun and described as, “altered from its original size. The buttstock had been removed, and the barrel had been cut and smoothed. The barrel length was measured at 10-inches.”

Some of the ammunition was Taylors, according to the police report, while some of it was given to him to sell. Taylor also claimed that he helped make the flashlight for Fox to store meth in.

Taylor’s felony conviction was for possession of a controlled substance in 2013. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and unlawful use of a weapon.

Fox was paroled on April 24, 2019, after having been sentenced to three years for possession of meth. Fox’s outstanding warrants were for meth possession and eluding police. He was additionally charged for possessing less than five grams of methamphetamine.
