Silas Wilard damaged by gunfire

Silas Willard Elementary school was reportedly damaged by gunfire Sunday night.

According to a Galesburg police report, officers were dispatched to the 1100-block of Bateman Street for a “shots fired” call that occurred around 7:56. En route to the scene, officers learned that two vehicles had departed the area.

Once on scene, officers located several spent shell casings in the roadway. Spent shell casings and an unfired round were found in a driveway of a nearby residence.

Several witnesses in the area told police they had seen a vehicle leaving the area shortly after the shots were observed. One witness told police they heard at least six gunshots fired in rapid succession.

Witnesses gave police varying vehicle makes and models but the indication from the reports that a Dodge and a Chevrolet left the scene shortly after the gunshots were heard.

The report says that Silas Willard suffered damage as a result of the gunfire.

District 205 Superintendent John Asplund says district officials have surveyed the damage and it appears a bullet penetrated the building’s siding, but not concrete.

Asplund says the district will fix the siding although cost estimates weren’t available.
