What could be considered an important piece of history has been recovered and returned to its rightful owner.

Bob Bondi — owner of the Bondi Building — says a plug from one of his building’s elevators has been returned.

Bondi says the “Otis Elevator Access Plate” was first discovered missing about a week ago. He credits Galesburg Police Officer Jared Tapscott with “conclusively determining” who took the plate and where they lived, and retrieved it.

Not only was the plate recovered, Bondi says, but a handwritten letter of apology also came with it.  He says he wasn’t going to pursue charges if that was done, and he’s holding to that.

Bondi estimates the value of the plate at $1,000, partly because of its uniqueness.
