Gilson man facing drug and weapons felonies

A Gilson man faces a slew of weapons charges as well as a methamphetamine possession charge after his arrest Wednesday.

Bail was set at $50,000 for 40-year-old Troy W. Cozart, who made a video appearance in Knox County Circuit Court yesterday with Judge Patricia A. Walton.

Cozart faces a half dozen weapons charges including a Class X felony of Armed Violence. He also is charged with three counts of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Felon in Possession of a Weapon, and Methamphetamine Possession.

According to a Galesburg Police report, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that Cozart was allegedly driving at around 11:52 Wednesday night. After discovering that he did not have a valid license, he was arrested.

That led to the discovery of a loaded New England 12-gauge shotgun in the backseat of the vehicle. The police report indicates that officers later learned the shotgun was reported stolen out of East Galesburg in 2006.

Additionally, officers found a drug pipe located in the center console that contained a substance that would field test positive for meth.

Cozart, a convicted felon, denied that neither the gun or the drugs were his.

He was appointed a public defender and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for February 19th.
