Unemployment down in Knox County, up in Galesburg

Unemployment in Galesburg is up for the month of September when compared to the same month the year before.

Numbers released yesterday from the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicate that the city saw a 0.2% increase between 2017 and 2018. Galesburg saw 104 more people either in the labor force or actively looking for work, which led to a slight increase in the unemployment rate.

The Galesburg Micropolitan Statistical Area saw a decrease in the unemployment rate from 4.7 to 4.6%.

Knox County continues to see a decrease in the unemployment rate but still lags behind the state average. The county’s unemployment rate sits at 4.6% for the month of September, down a tenth of a percent for this time last year. Illinois’ unemployment rate for September was 4.1%, with a three month average of 4.2%.

Unemployment is also down for Fulton, Henry, Stark, and Peoria counties; while increases were seen in Warren and McDonough counties. The highest unemployment rate in the area for September was Fulton County at 4.9% while the lowest was Warren County at 3.8%.

Looking at more metropolitan areas, Peoria saw a 0.3% decrease in their unemployment rate while the QC saw a 0.1% decrease.
