Galesburg man arrested following chase and crashes

An aggravated fleeing causing damage to property charge has been filed against a Galesburg man for a series of Thursday night crashes that occurred on South and Kellogg streets.

22-year-old Caleb M. Newland was arrested following a brief chase with Galesburg Police that began on the South Street and Seminary Street Underpass at around 8:43 .

According to reports, officers observed Newland’s white GMC SUV to have significant front end damage after allegedly hitting a concrete support for the underpass.

After officers turned on their emergency lights, Newland allegedly attempted to flee at a high rate of speed and eventually made his way to South Kellogg Street where he struck a power pole twice.

He surrendered to police without any further incident. Reports indicate that officers identified the smell of alcohol coming from him and on his breath. He allegedly told paramedics he had three shots of “99 Bananas Vodka”

Ameren crews were seen working on power poles on South Kellogg at around 4:45 Friday morning.
