Nominations forms ready for Adult Service and Youth Extra Effort Awards.

The Galesburg Youth Commission for years has been a 10-member committee that has not only tracked and compiled youth activities for the City of Galesburg, but also takes the time to recognize those who have gone above and beyond. Every year, the City sifts through nomination for the Adult Service to Youth Award. The award is given to an individual working in a volunteer role to assist in youth activities, developing projects, and providing support. Sue Cunningham with the commission says that a lot of organizations around town are working with these kids everyday – so this is another good way of getting them recognized. “There’s a lot of people who do things behind the scenes that don’t seek out recognition,” Cunningham said. “We just want them to know that all of their efforts are very much appreciated. There’s so many people in this town that are doing so much for our youth, and we want to get them recognized.” Another award given out when warranted is the Youth Extra Effort Award. “So many times we focus on the negative things that are going on and this is a way for us to show the kids that we do appreciate that they’re doing positive things for their community and giving back,” Cunningham added. The Youth Commission is a ten-person committee – which includes one youth member, that meets once a month and among other things, helps compile youth activities and opportunities locally. On the City of Galesburg website, the commission has compiled a database of 144 local youth activities and organizations in town. Past winner of the adult service award include Tracey Mergener in 2014 with her work with teen court, Linda Lewis in 2015 with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cindy Bershinger with Bright Futures in 2016, and Jeannette Cherin with CASA in 2016. To nominate someone for either award, visit city hall or the City of Galesburg website. Nominations are due March 29th – winners will be awarded during a Galesburg City Council meeting.
