Galesburg Alderman weigh monthly water billing

Changing Galesburg water and refuse billing from quarterly to monthly failed when it was brought up in March, will Alderman approve it now?

That item was on first reading at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

City Manager Todd Thompson said the council has had conversations and been provided with additional information throughout this year’s budgeting process.

Thompson says that no additional staff will be required but preparation and delivery of the bills would be contracted out.

Also, he says the city has invested in technology that helps process the payment although the cost of the transition will be around $40,000 a year.

The implementation would take approximately five months, with some residents paying monthly by March with everyone paying monthly by May if approved.

Thompson says if someone wanted to continue to effectively paying quarterly and they were comfortable with the amount of their bill they could pay in advance and their account would be credited.

The city would also like to encourage people to sign up for an online payment account.

By doing that residents can have automatic payments, they can see their billing history and pay in advance in they wish.
