Cursed no longer: Galesburg Cubs fans celebrate World Series bid

Cursed by a Billy Goat in 1945, foiled by Bartman in 2003 and decades of disappointment, the Chicago Cubs are finally heading back to the World Series.

Galesburg residents and others in the area who be at Wrigley Field in Chicago last night gathered at Duffy’s Tavern in downtown Galesburg to watch it go down.

The Cubs won their first pennant since 1945, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 Saturday night in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series.

Ashley Leopold was at Duffy’s last watching the game after traveling here from the Illinois Valley to attend a wedding.
Leopold and friends ditched the wedding early so they could watch the game.

She says the win brings up mixed emotions for her.

“My grandma who passed away was a huge Cubs fan and that’s how we became Cubs fan,” she said. “So it stirs up joy, it stirs up sadness. She would be losing her mind. She’d be so excited.

Galesburg resident Mike Love was also at Duffy’s. He says he’s going to Chicago to see the World Series games held at Wrigley Field.

Game 1 of the World Series between the Cubs and the Cleveland Indians is slated for Tuesday in Cleveland.
The last time the Cubs made it to the World Series was in 1945.
