Galesburg man arrested for battering police officer, drugs

A Galesburg police officer has a broken knuckle after an altercation with a local man who allegedly hit the officer and resisted detainment at the Knox County Jail.

Taverse Buckley of Galesburg is charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance.

Buckley was arrested last night in the 500 block of Holten Street where he was found with roughly one tenth of a gram of cocaine on his person after flagging the officer over to speak about a separate incident.

According to a police report, Buckley told the officer he believed he “planted” the baggie on him. Upon arrival at the jail, the Galesburg man allegedly struck the officer and was then taken to the ground.

The report says as Buckley began to grab the officers legs, he was punched in the head several times and the officer went into the “mount position.” Buckley then refused to enter a holding cell, using his legs to prevent shutting the door. The officer stomped the man’s ankle to get him to release his foothold.

In Knox County Court this afternoon, Buckley became agitated in his video conference with Judge Bruce Beal. Beal threatened to add a contempt of court charge after several outbursts, but did not. Bond was set at $75,000.
