Galesburg police warn residents to protect themselves from sizzling temps

Forecasts over the next few days have Knox County bracing for the first string of days with temperatures in the 90’s this year.

According the to the National Weather Service, Galesburg today has a high of 93 degrees with the low only dipping to 70 degrees overnight.

Tomorrow the NWS is calling for mostly sunny skies with a high of 94 and a low of 71.

In fact forecasted highs are in the 90’s or low 80’s through Wednesday, June 15.

Galesburg police Lt. Russ Idle says that residents should take precautions when it’s gets this hot.

Idle warns that first it’s important to stay hydrated and indoors if you can.

“If they get overheated they can always go to a local store that has air conditioning or family or a relative,” Idle says.

The city will occasionally open up cooling centers for those without access to air conditioning.

“We have not opened cooling stations at this point,” Idle says. “I suspect if temperatures got much higher the city would consider opening cool centers but at this point we have not.”

He adds that for those who are outside, sun block would be a good idea to avoid sun burns.

Also he cautions not to over exert yourself on sweltering summer days.
