Annual PAVER award goes to renovation works on Knox Alumni Hall, Bateman Street house

The Preservation Award for Voluntary Efforts in Restoration was presented yesterday for renovations at Knox College and a house on Bateman Street.

The PAVER award went to Alumni Hall on the Knox campus and 1080 Bateman St.

Knox President Teresa Amott attended last night’s Galesburg City Council meeting for the announcement. She thanked the architects from Holabird & Root for their work.

“They had the vision of how we could take a building of such extraordinary historic significance and transform it into a contemporary space honoring both the past and the future,” Amott said.

Alumni Hall reopened last year after the liberal arts school received $12.5 million in gifts for the renovation project.

Bob Miener was also given a PAVER award for his work on the Bateman Street property. Chairman of the Landmark Commission Paul Stewart said an attempt to paint the historic building failed in 1999.

“As a result of that, Mr. Miener went to the extraordinary effort and expense to replace the house with all wood siding,” Stewart said.

The PAVER award has been handed out annually since 1979.
