Habitat for Humanity to break ground at 50th Knox County home

Habitat for Humanity has been building homes in Knox County since 1993 at a rate of more than two houses per year. The international not-for-profit is breaking ground April 30 on Habitat house number 50.

Knox County Habitat Director Jordan Knight tells WGIL the 50th home is cause for celebration.

“It’s just a big nice number for us, but no different than all the rest,” he says. “I tell people a lot that we’re building on faith, that’s what’s happened with the 49 that came before this one, it’ll be the same for number 50.”

The home will be going to Regina Wenstrom and her three children. Knight says the homes aren’t simply built and given away, though.

“Regina is going to invest, at minimum, 250 hours of her time in the building of her home,” Knight says. “And she’ll also recruit 250 hours from family and friends and volunteers who will be new to Habitat.”

Habitat homeowners pay a zero interest mortgage on the house. Those mortgage payments are invested in the next build.

The groundbreaking ceremony is planned — rain or shine — for 2 p.m. April 30 in Ecklund Court in Galesburg.
