Trial date set for man accused in stabbing death

Knox County Judge Scott Shipplett set a trial date for a Chicago man accused in the 2014 stabbing death of 49-year-old Melvin Buckner.

Christopher Croom is scheduled to appear for jury trail during the week of April 18.

The 31 year old appeared in court yesterday with his counsel, Chief Public Defender Dave Hansen and Attorney Chris Kanthak. Croom faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.

Croom was indicted by a grand jury in September of 2014 — about a month after the stabbing.

At Croom’s appearance yesterday, he told the court there was “misconduct being perpetrated” by the judge and prosecution. Shipplett said the matter would be further discussed ahead of the April 18 trial date.

As cases stand now, Croom shares a trial date with 26-year-old Claude R. Shinall, who is accused of killing an elderly nursing home resident last year.
