Jewelry store robber caught in McLean County

A Galesburg man accused of stealing more than $23,000 in jewelry from Kohl’s Diamond Gallery is behind bars in McLean County and is expected to be transferred to the Knox County Jail today.

Galesburg police say 35-year-old Travis T. Williams is the accused, and was arrested Friday on a warrant by the U.S. Marshals service and Bloomington police.

According to reports, Williams stole two diamond bracelets from the store last Tuesday when he pepper sprayed an employee and fled from the scene with the jewels.

The victim told police that Williams had been in the store earlier in the week looking at engagement rings. As he had done multiple times throughout last week as well, Williams brought in a cardboard box from outside containing “Easter egg grass” showing employees on the day of the crime.

Williams has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery and bond has been set at $500,000 in the case.
