Annual Knox College International Fair is a cultural celebration

Cultural exhibits. A parade of flags. Traditional songs and dances from more than a dozen countries. And, of course, food from around the world.

Yesterday marked the conclusion of this year’s International Fair at Knox College.

International Club Co-President Sruthi Doniparthi tells WGIL I-Fair gives students the chance to show off a variety cultures.

“It’s a showcase of culture of all the international students on this campus,” she says. “We have a big international population, so this kinda give them a day to be proud of their culture and showcase it in a bunch of different ways.”

Taking a break from cooking Mexican dishes like fried tacos, rice pudding and hibiscus water, Marilyn Barnes says she appreciates I-Fair’s approach to sharing culture.

“It’s nice just to get to know a little bit of the food and the culture,” she says. “That’s why I like that this year they did the booths also during intermission of the showcase. We got to actually go around each table and learn a little bit about the country other than just the food. And the dances are great to watch as a visual representation of each country.”

Barnes is Co-President of MEChA, a national student-led activist organization aiming to further Chicano and Chicana education, culture and history.

This was I-Fair’s 35th year on Knox campus.
