Abingdon woman killed following wreck donates kidney to man in need

Compassion even in the final hours of life has taken place locally.

A Trivoli man will live on thanks to the kidney donation of 40-year-old Elizabeth Dechow who WGIL reported passed away Thursday as the result of a three car crash on January 4th.

Friends and family of 27-year-old Jake Ward confirmed that a successful transplant took place today. Ward was placed on a transplant waiting list in November and by December his kidney function had fallen to just three percent.

Ward waited for a donor until two days ago until the possibility of Dechow’s kidney became available. He remains in recovery. The Trivoli man is a 2006 graduate of Farmington High School and he and his wife are the parents of three children.

The family, who is still struggling to pay for expenses, has set up a GoFundMe campaign and a benefit is scheduled for Wednesday in Elmwood. The event will take place at O’Brian’s Uptown Cafe from 4 p.m. to close.
