Galesburg council to vote on rezoning on Carl Sandburg Drive

Galesburg alderman will vote Tuesday night on rezoning a piece of land to make way for the development of a thrift store.

The lot in question is on West Carl Sandburg Drive and can best be described as sitting in between Lowe’s and Lincoln Park Drive.

JPG Commerical Real Estate out of Peoria is the developer that has petitioned the city to ask for an ordinance that would rezone the property.

It’s zoned currently for offices, but to operate a retail establishment would have to changed to a B2- General Business District.

But it may come with some controversy because while the Planning and Zoning Commission approved the rezoning the Development Review Committee unanimously denied the amendment.

Council documents say that the current zoning’s intention is to serve as a transitional area between the commercial properties and the surrounding residential.

Alderman approving may have effects on the city’s retail landscape, but is not expected to have an effect on the city’s budget.

City Administration will bring a bid and an alternative for alderman to approve at Tuesday’s meeting for quiet zone improvements.

These particular improvements are for the Ottumwa Subdivision and would see improvements at crossings at Academy, Cedar and South Henderson streets.

Illinois Civil Contractors is the recommended bid for $158,000, which would have them install or remove curb, gutters and sidewalks.

It would also have them resurface the roadway at the three crossings, where pavement is in poor condition.

An additional alternative bid was submitted for the contractor to remove old pavement and install a new curb and ornamental fence on S. West St. at the location of the old crossing.

Council meets tonight at 6:30, moved back from their usual Monday meeting day due to the Labor Day holiday.
