National Guard Vets are considered regular military when it comes to veterans preference consideration in hiring, but a new law puts more emphasis on guard members from Illinois. The recently signed law was co-sponsored by 47th District State Senator Jil Tracy.
“It allows people who’ve served in other state’s national guards to be given a veteran’s preference if they’re living in Illinois,” Tracy said. “Certainly, if there’s an Illinois guards person they’d be given preference over an out-of-state national guard person.”
Senator Tracy says the National Guard is very much a part of our nation’s modern military – defending freedom and protecting our country. National Guard members qualify for veteran hiring preference if they served a minimum of four years in that role, regardless of whether they were mobilized to active duty.
The legislation was introduced this year by State Representative Norine Hammond of Macomb.
