Galesburg alderman approve new contract for energy aggregation

Galesburg alderman approved a new agreement for citizen electricity aggregation at their meeting last night.

The bid that alderman approved is for a three year period with Homefield Energy and will provide rates that are about 13 percent lower than the current rate according to City Manager Todd Thompson.

The three-year period was recommended due to volatility in the market according to Thompson. He says since implementing the aggregation program that citizens have saved about $2.4 million and see another $1.5 million in savings over the life of this agreement.

Alderman Peter Schwartzman says the energy aggregation program has served the city “extremely well.”

“But the backdrop is the citizens had to vote on a referendum to allow the city council to act on its behalf and they gave us their confidence to do so and we obliged,” said Schwartzman. “So I think that’s a great partnership and I hope it continues.”

Several alderman commented that they had heard and witnessed representatives from energy companies soliciting residents to sign up with them.

Alderman Fleming cautioned that many of these companies don’t provide green energy or the assurances that the city aggregation program with Homefield does. He adds that often companies often won’t be able to beat the aggregation rate.

Thompson says that other companies that aren’t the city’s “supplier of choice” can solicit but that residents should remain vigilant for scams. “Nobody from the city or Homefield – who we’ve selected – will contact you,” said Thompson. “You don’t need to do anything to take advantage of that rate. So if somebody contacts you or portrays themselves as representing the city or the city’s energy provider… it is not accurate.”

Thompson also announced that the city council will hold a work session on April 30 to discuss housing and minimum housing standards.
