Route 34 closing for six months for repairs and resurfacing

U.S. Route 34 will be closing to traffic on April 16 and is expected to stay closed for nearly six months.

The roadway will undergo extensive and repairs including to the pavement and bridge and will also be completely resurfaced.

Starting in a little over two weeks drivers traveling between Galesburg and Monmouth will have to take Route 164 until the 34 is reopened in October.

According to Kelsea Gurski, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Transportation, the department had anticipated leaving a lane open while they made repairs but it was decided to close it all together to make the project safer and speedier.

Keeping a lane open would have added a extra construction season to complete the work.
