Whitesboro Street from Main to Campbell to close today for replacement

Many joke that the spring season typically turns into “construction season” in the state of Illinois. But there’s several projects continuing around Galesburg that will be well worth the wait. In addition to work beginning on the North Farnham Street Bridge, and work continuing on the East Main Street Underpass, work on Whitesboro Street will continue starting today. City of Galesburg Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl gave WGIL and update: “Gunther Construction was able to do the north third of the project last year, and then we kind of hit the bad weather so they shut it down for the winter. They’ll be resuming the project Monday (March 26th). The street will be closed from Campbell to Main Street on Tuesday of next week. They expect they’ll get the whole road completed within five to six weeks.” The brick road surface that had fallen to disrepair is being replaced, and a full concrete paved street is being installed. New curb and gutter systems will also replace the old ones. Homes that qualify will also see their lead water service lines replaces throughout the construction phase. The City of Galesburg approved the project last August and will cost approximately $934,000.
