Erickson: Special Election will be needed for County Board replacement

The person Knox County Democrats want to replace District Three Democrat Mike Nelson on the Knox County Board may or may not have the job for as long as she wants it.

That’s according to Knox County Clerk, Scott Erickson.

“In [2018], that spot will come up as an unexpired term on the ballot,” says Erickson.  “So that person will be appointed to fill the interim time, but they will have to run…in [2018], and then they would just fill that unexpired term that [Nelson] was elected for.”

Erickson says that’s assuming no one else wants to run for the vacated seat.

Democrats are expected to pick Tara Wilder to replace Nelson next month, which then will go to the full County Board for final approval at their meeting.

Nelson resigned citing health reasons. Erickson — a Republican — calls Nelson a “great guy” and wishes him a full recovery.
