Galesburg alderman ok cannabis ordinance change

Galesburg alderman had no problem with changing how the city code deals with cannabis possession last night.
City Attorney Brad Nolden explains that council’s 4-0 vote in favor now lets the city charge individuals caught with less than ten grams of marijuana, with a ordinance violation.

In the window of time between when Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the bill to decriminalize that same amount and last night, individuals in Galesburg would have been charged with a civil law violation.

“Paid over the counter, I believe is somewhere between $100-200, that’s a civil law violation,” Nolden says. “When charged under the city code it’s an ordinance violation, so it’s slightly different. And the revenue, it’s broken down differently in what the city might receive when it’s prosecuted solely through the city as opposed to a civil law violation.”

Communities in Murphysboro and Wood River, Illinois have passed similar ordinances.

Galesburg council also amended the city’s number of class C liquor licenses for the purpose of giving one to the Mobil gas station looking to reopen by the Don Moffitt Overpass.

Coming off the holidays only four alderman were present last night; Angela Bastian, Corine Anderson, Peter Schwartzman and Wayne Allen.
