Salvation Army falling behind Christmas fundraising goal

The Salvation Army has had people ringing bells at local businesses for over a month now but they say they still have about $36,000 to go to meet their campaign goal. Tim and Lisa Thorson of the Galesburg Salvation Army say residents have been generous giving at the kettle but direct mail donations are far behind.

The campaign runs up until Christmas Eve but they’ll gladly accept donations after that date. The organization has programs to help those in need year round, like providing emergency food baskets or assistance paying utility bills. For Christmas the Salvation Army is giving assistance to 317 different families making up over 1,000 people. They helped 152 families at Thanksgiving with food. Also there are still 225 forgotten angels or children on their angel trees at local businesses they have not been picked up. Residents can find an angel with a child’s name and wish list on it at several local retailers. All toys are needed by Tuesday at 5 p.m.
