Free apple tasting event Thursday

People will get the opportunity to taste different kinds of apples tomorrow night at the Galesburg Public Library. Camp’s Orchard and grocery store is hosting a free apple tasting event at 6:30 p.m.

Tammy Camp’s store is located in Roseville and sells 23 types of apples, plus related products like jams and cider. Camp says the varieties she’ll bring for sampling have recently been picked. Those include Arkansas Black, Winesap and Ida Red.

But she says she’ll also bring more familiar apples like Granny Smith and Fugi.

“I don’t really think I need to bring red and yellow delicious to a tasting because everybody knows those,” Camp says. “But I will bring those just in case.”

Camps say she enjoys growing apples, but she says it’s also a lot of hard work and goes on all year-long.

Some apples bloom in March and that can be a dicey time because of the changing weather.

“There’s been a couple year when we were up most of the evening with fires burning to save all of the blossoms,” she says.

Attendees will get to sample the apples, homemade cider and learn about the orchard.

People can buy boxes of apples at the event, as well.

The event is open to all ages, but the library staff asks people to register. People can call 343-6118 to say they’re coming or email reference@galesburglibrary.org.

Camp’s store, about 45 minutes southwest of Galesburg, is open until Thanksgiving.
