Local schools gear up for graduation

Graduation season is upon us and the first area school to hold commencement will be Carl Sandburg College tonight.

The 48th annual commencement is at 7 p.m. in the Galesburg High School Auditorium.

Carl Sandburg Director of Admission and Records Rick Eddy tells WGIL about 258 students will be participating in the ceremony.

“And then the number of total graduates — we factor in those who graduated in December because we don’t have a ceremony there and then we have those who will finish up in the summer — and so that number will be somewhere around 570 students total for the year,” Eddy says.

He adds that number is on par with the past couple years.

Educator, administrator and community leader Naomi Law will be Sandburg’s commencement speaker at tonight’s ceremony.

After Sandburg, the next graduations are set for May 15 when Monmouth College along with Knoxville and United school districts hold commencement.

Then on May 27, Abingdon school district will see seniors off before May 29, when Galesburg, ROWVA and Monmouth-Roseville students graduate.

Knox College’s graduation is June 5 and will feature U.S. Senator Dick Durbin as commencement speaker.

Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Jon Meacham will be speaking at Monmouth College’s 159th commencement.
