A-town school board member asks for patience during data breach investigation

Wednesday’s Abingdon-Avon School Board meeting saw board members take a verbal lashing from community members but one member is saying that’s what happens when voters don’t feel like they’re being heard.

Over 150 community members were present, and most were expressing frustration with the secrecy of a district investigation into how grades in the student information management system were changed without authorization.

After a five hour closed session, the board and administration appeared to about 30 citizens and simply said the investigation is ongoing.

Board Member Dedra Mannon tells WGIL she wishes the board would’ve given a more complete response to the public.

“Basically giving them some sort of confirmation and level of comfort that we understand your frustration and are looking into this, but at this current moment, we don’t have anymore information than what we can share

Public comments Wednesday also hammered on allegations that Superintendent Chad Willis “bullies” and unfairly targets employees.

“We as a board need to look into those and research those and make sure that we have all of the facts,” Mannon says.

The District 276 board member adds that she wants to assure the public the accusations are being handled seriously.

“Every issue that was brought up is of major concern to the school board that is currently in place.”

Mannon hopes that those who wish to further voice their opinion attend the next board meeting on May 11 at 7 p.m.
