Nova Singers Presents: Voices of the Prairie
Saturday, April 9, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Nova Singers, under the direction of Dr. Laura Lane, presents two performances of Voices of the Prairie Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Kresge Recital Hall, Knox College, 500 South Prairie, in Galesburg, and Sunday, April 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Figge Art Museum, 225 W 2nd Street, Davenport.
In this unique collaboration Nova Singers will be joined by the Midwest Paint Group in a celebration of Midwestern art, poetry and song. The concert will be paired with an art exhibit featuring original paintings by members of the Midwest Paint Group. The Davenport concert will be held at the Figge Art Museum, and the entire museum will be available to Nova Singers’ patrons. Both concerts will include appetizers and drinks (appetizers and cash bar).
The concert will also premiere a new work by composer Abbie Betinis, based on a poem by Carl Sandburg. Dr. Lane says, “It’s so exciting to collaborate with painters making landscape paintings, poets who focused on the prairie, like Carl Sandburg, and local composers and singers! This program is about what it’s like to live and work in the prairie Midwest. We are incredibly excited about our collaboration with the Midwest Paint Group: in both locations, audience members can come early and see the paintings. Then, the musical experience will combine works about the prairie with music composed by prairieland musicians like Bruce Polay and Ed Davis. Plus, Minneapolis composer Abbie Betinis has written an absolutely gorgeous new piece on Carl Sandburg’s poem “Harvest Moon” especially for Nova Singers, to celebrate our 30th season. We will give the world premiere of this new work at these concerts. The second half of the program is super-fun: every song features a different aspect of prairie life, whether it’s prairie flowers, prairie grasses, the moon, the sunset, the big river—it’s all there. Come explore with us the experience of living on this beautiful prairie.”
Because of limited seating, and the expectation that the crowd for this event will be larger than usual, Nova Singers is encouraging concert goers to pre-purchase tickets at the special price of $22 for adults and $17 for seniors. This price is good through March 20, 2016. After March 20, tickets will be available for $25 for adults and $20 for seniors. Tickets can be purchased at the Nova Singers website www.novasingers.com or by sending a check in the correct amount to Nova Singers, PO Box 1302, Galesburg, IL 61402.
