Congratulations to January’s KFM Teacher of the Month — Katie Smith — a Life Skills teacher at Knoxville High School. Katie was nominated by Bryce Jefferson who is a student in her class. As KFM’s Teacher of the Month, Katie receives the Big Red Apple Award with her name engraved on it from Lacky Monuments along with a $100 gift card from Tompkins State Bank and a bouquet from Cooks-n-Company. Here’s what Bryce had to say about Katie:
What sets this teacher apart from others?
Mrs. Smith works so hard to provide amazing experiences for her students to grow and build independence. She plans outings that give the students opportunities to practice ordering from a menu, shopping and paying for their own items, and interacting with the public. She also builds these types of experiences within the classroom as well. She invites peers into the classroom to interact with the students by making crafts, cooking, or playing games. This builds social and communication skills and makes going to school fun!
What is one thing this teacher does that is not in their job description but they do it anyway to help you or your child?
She is constantly reaching out to the public and business and finding ways to provide new experiences for her students.
Give an example of a way this teacher has helped or impacted you or your child.
The growth that Bryce has seen in the past few years due to Mrs. Smith’s time and effort, compassion and empathy is astounding. This is the best life skills program in the area and it is totally due to her hard work. We are just so thankful for her and she is so deserving of this honor.
Congratulations Katie Smith from Nissan of Galesburg, Tompkins State Bank, Cooks-n-Company, Lacky Monuments and 105.3 KFM
