City of Monmouth to earn revenue on 5G service

5G service for US Cellular customers is coming to residents of Monmouth and the city will see some revenue from it.

It was revealed during Monday night’s city council meeting that the telecommunications company had approached the city about erecting seven standalone cellular antennas on top of ornamental light poles that would be put up around the city.

Monmouth’s City Administrator, Lew Steinbrecher, tells WGIL that US Cellular is paying for the light poles, installation, electrical hookup, and even monthly rent to the city for these antennas.

“It’s all on their dime. And, in exchange, they’ll put up these new 5G antennas and then pay us rent for it. So it’s a very nice deal for the city.”

The City will see $600 a year for each light pole — a total of $4,200 a year in annual revenue for the antennas.

Steinbrecher adds that Monmouth is a strong market for the phone and Internet provider.

“I do know that there was something unique about Monmouth that — US Cellular is very interested in putting this system in place here as one of their first investments of this new technology.”

The City Council still has to approve the agreement with US Cellular, which they’ll consider at their next meeting on Monday, January 21.
