Structural issues at Mary Davis Home

Work will need to be done to correct structural issues at the Mary Davis Home.

The overseeing committee chair, Jared Hawkinson, told board members at last night’s Knox County Board meeting that a plan needed to be put in place to correct the issue.

“We learned that the building when it was constructed 25-some years ago there was no expansion joints installed in any of the masonry. Which is resulting in large structrual cracks and doors and windows that are being offset.”

Cody Basham with Klingner and Associates tells WGIL that the bid documents will call out for any fractured masonry to be replaced, new expansion and contraction joints to be sawcut into the existing masonry building to allow the for expansion and contraction as necessary

Basham said that “back then it wasn’t standard practice/understanding for architects, engineers, and contractors to take building movement through expansion and contraction into consideration when designing and constructing buildings.”

The board approved the bid and bring back for building repairs as well as the $12,000 invoice for Klingner, who was putting together the bidding package for work at the Mary Davis Home.
