Knox Co. unemployment at 4.6 percent

Knox County unemployment numbers are not as good as they were last month but still better than they were a year ago.

Numbers released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security show that the unemployment rate in Knox County increased from 4.4 percent in August to 4.6 percent this month.

That’s reflected in an increase of 164 people in the labor force with only 102 of them being employed for the month of September.

When compared to last year, Knox County’s unemployment rate sits 0.4 percent better with fewer people in the labor force and only a slight increase in the number of jobs.

The unemployment rate for the City of Galesburg improved over last year.

IDES says the city saw an increase in the number of employed people while seeing a slightly smaller labor force leading to a flat 5 percent unemployment, which is 0.5 percent better than last year.

Those numbers are not as good as they were last month when the unemployment rate was 4.8 percent and the number of unemployed people was 593.

Last month, the city of Galesburg’s labor force was 12,353 while this year it was 12,438. Those numbers reflect 57 newly employed people and 28 people still looking for work.

The highest unemployment in the area was McDonough County, which was at 5.6 percent, a 1.1 percent increase over last year.

The lowest unemployment was Warren County which sits at 3.7 percent, which is 0.4 percent better than it was a year ago.

Other counties that saw improvements in their unemployment were Fulton, Henry, Peoria, and Stark counties.

Mercer County was stagnant with a 4.4 percent unemployment rate.
