New Monmouth College center to help students make the world a better place

Monmouth College is creating an academic center that they say will help channel the passions of students who want to make a difference in the world. The Center for Civic and Social Change will draw on five current minors and programs; Global Public Health Initiative, Global Food Security Initiative, Peace Ethics and Social Justice, the Rural Schools Collaborative and the Peace Corps Preparation Program.

Monmouth President Clarence Wyatt says the school’s “essence” has long been to empower young people to be “forces for good” in the personal, professional and civic spheres.

This new Center for Civic and Social Change is supposed to give “greater focus and energy” towards that objective.

Monmouth political science professor, Michael Nelson helped the lead the initiative which was faculty-led.

Nelson says their liberal arts approach encourages students to not only think about other academic disciplines or professions, but how we can be “better citizens.”

He adds that employers are eager to hire students who are dedicated to making their communities a “better place.”
