Employers looking for holiday workers – so are scammers.

If you are looking for some extra money during the holidays, there are jobs available on a seasonal basis in many industries. Retailers and shippers are planning to hire more than 700,000 seasonal employees this holiday season, so the Better Business Bureau advises job seekers to polish up their resumes and start looking now. Agency investigator Shellie Kreter says you should research potential employers and apply right away. She says wary of advertisements for “work from home” or “secret shopper” positions that ask for any sort of up-front fee. “If they’re asking you that you need to pay a fee for training for a job, or you need to pay a fee for a background check or a drug test, those kind of jobs are very often scams.” She suggests you try to work where you shop, dress neatly and be prepared for an interview when applying, and be flexible. As a seasonal employee, you can expect to work long, sometimes inconvenient hours, possibly including Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
