Opioid Overdose Prevention and Awareness Workshop being held May 10th

The Robert Young Center in Peoria, The City of Galesburg Police Department, Bridgeway, and the Knox County Health Department have partnered up to provide some life-saving training Thursday, May 10th.

“Opioid Overdose, Awareness, Education and Prevention Training” will cover topics that include: opioid identification, it’s effects on the brain and human body, symptoms of an overdose, Naloxone, and more.

Susan Tisdale, Community Educator with the Peoria Human Service Center tells WGIL that whether you are affected directly or not, it plays a big role in reducing the stigma and stereotype of someone who is. “Because that provides a lot of barriers for people who are affected,” Tisdale said. “It may keep them from seeking treatment. It may keep them from speaking to someone. What we are hopeful for though, (is) people will learn about opioids. They will learn what Narcan is (and) how to use it. In case they, in fact, they need to use it to save someone’s life from an overdose.”

The training is made possible through a federal grant received by the Peoria Human Service Center. Emergency, first responders and community members are all welcome to attend. All participants will receive a free Naloxone (Narcan) kit. The workshop is being held Thursday, May 10th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Bridgeway – 2323 Windish Drive in Galesburg.
