Despite the awareness drivers are more distracted than ever

“There’s a time and a place to do what you need to get accomplished” is what Knox County Sheriff David Clague told WGIL in regards to distracted driving.

With distracted driving enforcement efforts amped up last week for Distracted Driving Awareness Week, Galesburg Police stopped nearly 250 motorists for various circumstances.

Nearly 210 citations were issued last week for distracted driving – three times more than last year.

Efforts to combat distracted driving were increased last week being Distracted Driving Awareness Week in Illinois.

Galesburg Police Officers stepped up efforts in unmarked cars – which is what led to the increase in citations than previous years.

The stops by GPD led to four felony arrests, four suspended license arrests, four speeding tickets, and four seat belt citations. Seven fugitives were also arrested, and nearly 30 motorists were cited for driving uninsured vehicles.

WGIL reported that officers conducting distracted driving watches on Losey Street on Wednesday last week observed a Burlington woman driving and using a cell phone at the same time and initiated a traffic stop.

That stop led to the driver being arrested for meth possession and delivery, while her passenger was arrested for meth possession and for outstanding Warren County warrants.

Clague says even though Distracted Driving Awareness was last week – drivers always need to be focused on the drive.
