Rock Steady Boxing – more than hitting a bag.

A program that started in the late summer of 2017 is growing in popularity for those affected by Parkinson’s Disease.

Rock Steady training in Galesburg began at the Galesburg Youth Athletic Club in August with Director Carlos Duncan. Studies have shown that boxing and training slows the progression of Parkinson’s as well as builds strength, balance, and coordination. The program is also offered at the Warren County YMCA. “(There’s) focusing skills,” explained Candy Conard. “We have different exercises not only with our body and being physical, but also with our mental state. Physically putting washers on pegs…..fitting shapes into (holes)…and puzzles. It’s not only about the body, it’s about the mind and the spirit as well. We hope that bringing people in will keep giving them positive reinforcement throughout the whole thing.” Both Conard and Duncan say if you or someone you know is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, they are welcome at any time. It’s easy to get caught up, you get out of it what you put in, and it’s a safe place full of respect and free of judgement. Galesburg classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the Galesburg Youth Athletic Club from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. Monmouth classes at the Warren County YMCA are held Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00am to 11:00am. A Parkinson’s support group is held on the first Tuesday of every month from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at Perkins in Galesburg. For more information, contact Carlos Duncan at 309-299-1606 or the Warren County YMCA at 309-734-3183.
