Prairie Drifters Radar Run returns to Lake Storey Sunday

Snowfall may typically slow down road traffic – but not vehicles built to thrive in wintertime.

The fastest snowmobiles in the Midwest will take to the frozen Lake Storey in Galesburg for the Prairie Drifters Snowmobile Club Radar Run. Starting at 10:00am until 3:00pm on Sunday, snowmobile enthusiasts can test their speed for the annual event. Phil Hennenfent with the club tells WGIL some of the snowmobiles reach speeds of nearly 150 miles per hour. “We got plenty of ice out there this year,” Hennenfent said. “We’re really looking forward to it. It’s $10 for three runs – and you can run your snowmobile. You can keep paying – as much as you’d like to run. It’s a thousand foot track. You’re not racing anyone. You’re just going for your top speed. Then we have prizes for the top finishers in each class.” This year’s event will actually the first held in several years – with conditions finally favorable for testing top speeds. Hennenfent says they expect the biggest turn-out in recent years – with several riders coming from out-of-state with their custom machines and sleds.  Food donations for area food pantries will also be collected and concessions will also be available. For more information on the event or if you are interested on joining the club, visit the club’s Facebook page
