Rough stretch of 34 is set for resurfacing

Since it’s installment in 1986, there’s no doubt the stretch of US 34 from Galesburg to Monmouth has proven it’s convenience.

If you’ve traveled the stretch from Galesburg to the Cameron exit there’s no doubt that it’s in great need of resurfacing.

As part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Multi-Year Highway Improvement Program, work on 34 is expected to begin on that stretch starting in May.

The four and a half mile stretch on US 34 from the West Main Street interchange to the Cameron Exit – which is 140th street, will receive resurfacing for lanes going in each direction, shoulder restoration, and drainage restoration.

In a press release, an IDOT spokesperson says the “pavement is in poor condition and is costly to maintain” which is “a continuously reinforced concrete pavement….in need of rehabilitation.”

IDOT expects to send bids out for the work beginning in March.

Also a part of the 2019-2023 Multi-Year Program, IDOT plans on addressing the stretch of US 34 from the Highway 150 exit – or North Henderson Street to Interstate 74.
