District 205 looking at maintaining last year’s tax levy tonight

The District 205 Board of Education tonight could approve their tax levy of nearly $19 million.

Like some other local taxing bodies District 205 is leaving their levy the same as last year relying on an estimated 2.67 percent raise in the Equalized Assessed Value of properties. That will be the lone action item.

Lots of items of discussion await members though including an item that has been kicked around for most of the year, video taping board meetings.

Another is increasing pay for substitute teachers after Human Resources Director Jon Bradburn informed the board last month that Galesburg schools are struggling to find enough subs to cover classes for the average 19 teachers missing a day.

Bradburn added that many neighboring districts pay substitutes more than Galesburg’s rate of $85 a day.

Member Wayne Statham last month suggested increasing that to $95 with an incentive of $105 per day for those don’t decline an assignment for consecutive days.

A non-fraternization policy will also be discussed by the Board of Education.

This had been brought up by 205 Superintendent Dr. John Asplund at previous meetings – as the district currently does not have one in place.

According to Board documents, the policy will “prohibit the romantic or sexual relationships where there is supervision, direction or control in the chain of command between parties.”

Board documents say the purpose of the policy is to “avoid potential conflicts of interest, favoritism, exploitation, harassment or breaches of professional standards.”
