Knox County Housing Authority approves final payment on Brentwood Manor renovation

Renovation to bricks, roofing, stairwells and other repair work at the Brentwood Manor Apartments started in September of last year — $198,000 later, construction is complete.

With today’s OK by the Knox County Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, the final $19,841 payment to Seaton-based Northwest Restoration was approved.

KCHA Executive Director Derek Antoine says the renovation work wasn’t just cosmetic.

“There were some issues safety-wise that some of it could have come lose and caused issues,” Antoine says.

He adds that he is happy with the craftsmanship of the renovation over the past few months.

“Northwest continues to be a company that we continue to work very well with and the work is good work, so we’re very pleased,” he says.

Early estimates called for $193,000 in renovation work, about $5,000 less than the final cost.

Also discussed during today’s meeting was the Housing Authority’s search for a resident commissioner to serve on the board. Since Floyd Palmer stepped down last November, the quest to fill the vacancy has been “slow going.”

Antoine says regulation requires housing authorities to have “someone who is actively being assisted through the agency” sit on the board, such as a resident on a public housing lease or someone who has signed a voucher.

KCHA has a couple people in mind to fill the role.
