GPD seizes gun following DUI accident

Galesburg Police seized a gun following a traffic incident involving an alleged drunk driver.

Officers responded to the intersection of South Seminary and East Berrien Streets at 5:01 p.m. on Sunday in response to a hit and run.

Officers were informed by the victim that the other vehicle had turned in front of him, causing contact and making his vehicle shake from side to side.

The victim knew the alleged other driver and informed him it was 25-year-old Ricardo C. Garcia.

Garcia was located on Locust Street and followed until he pulled into a driveway in the 1300-block of Webster Street. Officers made contact with him regarding the incident – noting the smell of alcohol emitting from him.

Officers observed a small, black handgun sitting in the center console cup holder, unholstered and not in a case.

Garcia was placed in handcuffs and the gun was removed from the vehicle. The checked and found it was loaded with a bullet in the chamber.

Officers used a portable breathalyzer and it indicated that Garcia had a blood-alcohol content level of 0.11 .

He was transported to the Knox County Jail, and after a 20 minute observation was tested again, this time he blew a 0.098 .
