Road work on I-74 to result in lane closures

Highway construction on Interstate 74 starts today north of Galesburg.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says there will be on and off lane closures for about three weeks between mile markers 41 and 42.

Lane closures will start on the east-bound side of I-74 and then move to the west-bound side. IDOT says the lane closures will allow them to complete bridge painting work.

IDOT asks commuters to slow down when driving through the work zones and be extremely cautious.

Fines for speeding in a construction zone are $375 for a first offense and at least $1,000 dollars for a second offense. Two offenses within a two-year-period can result in a 90-days suspension of a driver’s license.
